From on 06/20/2018 in Category Energy Management, SMA Solar Academy, Tech tips with 10 Comments

The energy management of the future is here! Everything on one platform for the first time: intelligent connection of heating, cooling, solar power and e-mobility.

In an effort to digitize commercial energy management and bring greater energy independence to customers, SMA has introduced a new, future-proof generation of monitoring and control solutions with the Data Manager M, which replaces SMA’s Cluster Controller.

The Data Manager M is a flexible and expandable solution equipped to enable the business models of future energy markets. It is the ideal solution for commercial system owners and operators alike as it optimizes communication, monitoring and control of decentralized PV systems for up to 50 devices with Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS.

With a new, highly efficient user interface, the Data Manager M is easy to set up and commission.

Watch this Tech Tip to walk through the installation and commissioning of the Data Manager M, including the Sunny Portal registration.

Bailey, I like the way you think! There is an RS485 port (X2) on the EDMM that is currently inactive. It is on the roadmap to have this be functional with a near-term FW release. However, I do not know if that will include SMA Data I support to allow communication with a Sunny Island -US directly. We will definitely make noise about it if or when that happens.

Just installed an SMA Data Manager M, attempted to register thru https://ennexos.sunnyportal.com/. Unfortunately never get success. When tried to save at Step # 4 always fail with comment ” An error has occurred”. An error has occurred while creating your system. Try again later.

It happened all the time till today. Please advise how to solve the problem.

    Thank you

Kukuh – Step 4 where the PIC and RID code of the device are entered?
Have you verified that the Data Manager is connected to the internet and can be reached by ennexOS Sunny Portal?
If so, here are the ports and servers that must be reachable through the site firewalls:
Data Manager M – Advanced Network Requirements
•Port 443 (TCP) https – for the upload. Port 80 is not used)
•Port 123 (NTP time server) – automatic time setting
      •Update.sunny-portal.com (device update)
•Ntp.sunny-portal.com (automatic time setting) (with the new FW 1.3.13.R also self configured NTP servers are possible)
      •Ldm-devapi.sunny-portal.com (data upload)

Hi Mike thank you for your prompt reply. So I have to change all the suggested settings locally ? We did local commissioning successfully, but always got no luck to register it at Sunny Portal.
PIC 003563003996553 RID: WSSY6T were entered.

My best recommendation is to reach out to our Service department for support. Here is the contact information: https://www.sma-america.com/service-support/overview.html

For what the port 5924 TCP is used?
When I activated the proxy server, goes then all traffice over the proxy (incl. 5924)?
It is possible to check if the complete communciation are OK? Or must I wait one day to see data in the Sunnyportal Online?

(One tip, please documanted the network communication in the manual. Because you write here (https://files.sma.de/dl/7680/CyberSecurity-TI-en-10.pdf):
“Ensure that all unused IP ports in the firewall are blocked. Unused IP ports in other systems should be deactivated. Each open IP port is a potential risk for system intrusion. ”
And in the your manual you write nothing over Port settings! Thats not fine.)

Thomass, I do not think that the Data Manager needs to communicate over port 5924. See my reply to Kukuh’s post on this article dated April 4, 2019 for the required communications port. If there are other questions you have about specific ports used in your system, please call our Service Line at 1-877-697-6283.

    Hi SMA
We installed Data Manager one in our projects and we have concerned about connection of DATA M to third party energy meter. Our client have have their on Meter (Siemens PAC3100 with RS485 communication port) and we wanted it to connect to DATA Manager. Do we need convert the RS485 to TCP so the Data M can read? (Like this one Gateway Modbus TCP/UDP to Modbus RTU/ASCII) or
Can you give us advice what device do we need to connect the Data manager to Siemens PAC3100?

Thank you and looking forward for your response.

Jake, please see Section 9.5 of the Data Manager (EDMM) Operating Manual (https://files.sma.de/dl/31011/EDMM-10-BE-en-19.pdf) for how to access the Modbus meter configuration section on the EDMM. The EDMM does need to communicate via Modbus TCP. You will need to create a Modbus map for this meter, as the EDMM has a few pre-configured approved meters. I have not created a custom map, but you should be comfortable with Modbus registers if you want to do this.
